Railway electricity from renewable energies
ÖBB has one of the most environmentally friendly railway networks in the world. Since 2018, the company’s railway electricity has been obtained from 100 % renewable energy sources. Calling eight hydroelectric power plants its own, ÖBB even generates a third of the electricity it needs itself.
But that's not all: 73 % of the railway lines in the ÖBB network are already electrified. These lines do not produce any exhaust gases and CO2 emissions. And ÖBB has even bigger plans: By 2030, bus and train journeys by ÖBB are going to be CO2-neutral.

The direct comparison proves it - you can travel three times by train from Vienna to Zell am See-Kaprun and produce less CO2 emissions than on a single car journey from the federal capital to us. In Pinzgau you not only take a holiday from road traffic, you can even use public transport for free in the summertime: If you take a break from everyday life in Zell am See-Kaprun, you can use the public transport of your choice completely free of charge with the Pinzgau Mobility Card from 1 May to 31 October - and that from the first day of your entire holiday stay.
Train, postbus and the Pinzgau local railway take you to any sight of your choice in summer and autumn with the Mobility Card. Whether for a hiking experience on the Schmittenhöhe, for swimming or a boat trip on Lake Zell, or for a gondola ride to the summit of the Kitzsteinhorn - there are plenty of stops.
Tip for the cold season:
If you are already planning your winter holiday, then we recommend you to also travel in an environmentally friendly way: The ski buses in Zell am See-Kaprun have enough storage space and the ride is free if you have a valid ski pass for the region. So, leave the driving to someone else and power out in the snow instead of on the road.
