The power of water generating sustainable energy and experiencing nature in Kaprun
The high mountain reservoirs Mooserboden and Wasserfallboden in Zell am See-Kaprun are impressive examples of modern technology, and are a central element of our sustainable energy production. Nestling at over 2,000 metres above sea level, they resemble fjords and offer spectacular views of the surrounding Alpine landscape.
Generating sustainable energy
Deep in the mountain and barely visible from the outside are the pumped-storage power plants of the Kraftwerksgruppe Kaprun-Salzach power plant group. Often referred to as ‘green batteries’, they are of great importance for a successful energy transition. When other power plants produce more electricity than is needed - for example electricity from other renewable energy sources such as solar and wind - the pumped-storage power plants can pump water from the lower reservoir into the higher-situated reservoir, store it there and then generate electricity again when it is needed. Kraftwerksgruppe Kaprun covers 10% of Austria's peak electricity demand with green electricity from hydropower. It is particularly noteworthy that this type of electricity generation can supply around 122,000 households and saves an enormous amount of CO2, which makes the plant an important component in combating climate change. Therefore, and due to many other measures throughout Austria, is VERBUND one of the most environmentally friendly electricity producers in Europe and sets a benchmark for ecologically responsible energy generation.
Commitment to the environment
VERBUND is not only committed to energy generation, but also to the protection of biodiversity and local ecosystems. Investments in the protection of the environment and ecological measures demonstrate the company's commitment to preserving the region’s natural beauty and diversity. This commitment is underpinned by numerous certifications and a defined environmental mission statement, which is regularly reviewed by external experts.
Experience and education
In addition to their role in supplying sustainable energy, the Kaprun high mountain reservoirs are a popular excursion destination. Visitors can easily reach the reservoirs with Europe's largest open inclined lift and take part in guided tours that offer insights into how electricity generation works. The ‘Electricity Adventure World’ and Stromi's educational trail for children provide exciting learning units on the connection between nature and technology. For those seeking adventure, there are via ferrata routes, including one directly on the dam wall, which offer a unique perspective on the technical and natural miracles of these facilities.
